Sustainable year-round accessibility to a luxury property

A durable snow-plowable gravel driveway and a lush grass driveway make this a natural home-coming for these Jackson Hole residents.

"The TrueGrid is great! We really like it under the grass, but probably more so we love it under the gravel section keeping everything neat and clean."

-Tim Glick, General Contractor & Home Owner

Challenge

Jackson, Wyoming is one of the most beautiful places on the planet. It’s a gateway to two of America's most iconic national parks, Yellowstone and Grand Teton, and known for its world-renowned skiing and snowboarding. And it’s a challenge for luxury property designers and builders, with 465 inches of snow and a low of 35 degrees below zero on average. The materials they choose have to stand up to the harshest climate and yet stay beautiful all year long.

This design-focused property owner, a general contractor himself, wanted a beautiful approach to his impeccably built home but without the maintenance headaches of asphalt or gravel or the high cost of concrete.

Solution

TrueGrid permeable pavers were selected for 2 adjacent driveways - one gravel-filled for the main driveway; the other grass-filled for entry to the toy garage. Year-round maintenance was a must, with snow removal throughout the winter and mowing in the summer months.

Design considerations

Primary driveway: Given the frequent traffic, constant parked vehicle weight, and regular snow plowing TrueGrid PRO PLUS was selected for the main reinforced gravel driveway. The design called for overfilling the TrueGrid driveway to highlight the natural gravel, understanding that the gravel on the surface could drift, while the gravel inside the TrueGrid would maintain its stability. The area was excavated and compacted, a non-woven fabric placed, base gravel added and compacted, TrueGrid PRO PLUS installed, and then a road base added as infill and then about 1” of overfill.

Drive-able turf: Used less frequently and with light vehicles, TrueGrid PRO LIGHT was the go-to solution for the grass driveway. The area was excavated and the base prepped and compacted with root-friendly road base. TrueGrid was laid, readily-accessible top soil filled, and sod rolled over the top and compressed.

Result

"We've used both plow trucks and skid steers on it with no problems."

- Tim, Property Owner

Installed in the summer of 2023, the TrueGrid driveways have withstood the strains of 2 winters of snow removal, extreme temperatures, and have remained beautiful throughout the year. In fact, snow removal with skid steers and snow plows has been easy. The TrueGrid/gravel structure stays sturdy, and while the overfilled gravel drifts a bit, it’s easily redistributed.

Both the gravel and grass drives are doing great. This spring [2025], during our annual cleanup I raked the driveway gravel a bit and it looked just like the day we installed. So great! Not having to bring in fresh gravel every year or two is so nice.

And an unexpected bonus:

"For sure the esthetics of overfilling in residential detailing is key and the spillover is a small price to pay. At the same time what is very nice is that you don't get any settlement where the tires consistently travel like you would on a regular gravel driveway and even a chip seal driveway."

TrueGrid stands up to the harshest climates and is easily maintained. Whether reinforcing turf or handling the weight of anything that can drive on the road, it’s a beautiful and practical solution for residential projects.
